It wouldn’t be wrong to say that there is no limit to the scope of experimentation within the ambit of Indian classical music. And this concert in the city could easily be a testimonial to this.
Tonight, renowned names from the fraternity will team up to fuse traditional music styles with more contemporary ones at an event aptly titled Avishkar (Discovery). The performance will see a mélange of swar (vocals) and taal (rhythm), with nritya (dance).
The artiste line-up features vocalist Kaushiki Chakrabarty, tabla player Anindo Chatterjee and percussionist Ranjit Barot.
“We’ll try to look at the traditional from a contemporary perspective and make something new for the future, without corrupting our core value of music,” says Barot.
Popular kathak dancer Sandeep Mahavir will join these artistes and perform a routine to their renditions. “Four of us are coming together to experiment with
something new. The performance will be a merger of the sounds of the present time, keeping the tradition in mind,” says Mahavir. This is the first time that these four artistes are sharing the stage.
Aavishkar is being organised by cultural outfit Pancham Nishad and will be held at the Nehru Centre. Kaushiki, daughter of popular Indian classical singer Ajoy Chakrabarty, is excited at the prospect of this experimentation with her vocals. “This will be the second time that I’ll experiment with contemporary and traditional classical music. My first one was with Shantanu Moitra for (music TV series) Coke Studio,” she says. Talking about her performance, she adds, “I will perform traditional renditions in the beginning. The finale will be the collaboration among all the entire artistes. I am especially looking forward to Ranjit Barot’s act.”
