Don Raja performs in city today

Brit-Indian rapper Steven Kapur aka Apache Indian talks about the time he was ‘numbah-one-on-the-Bombay-charts.’

Apache Indian aka Steven Kapur is a changed man. The minute Kapur steps out of the airport, you notice that like his music, the bhangramuffin has moved on from his signature striped-and-spiked hairdo to sporting dreadlocks to mark his allegiance with reggae, a genre under which he has been releasing albums lately. “I’ve been busy touring and experimenting with a lot of music genres and diversifying as a musician,” says Kapur, who has now taken to being a DJ.

Mumbai, or Bombay of Kapur’s times, has changed considerably for the Birmingham boy. “I’ll be performing here after seven to eight years. I keep visiting the city almost every year, but it has changed tremendously. The airport is new, even the taxis look new, but the city is still as crazy and that’s what I love about it,” he says.

In the city as a part of his five-city India tour, Kapur is set to launch his latest album, Music Is Freedom. “It’s a mix of everything — bhangra, rap, reggae and electronic put together.” Besides performing for body-winding and belly-wriggling audience in the city, the Don Raja, another moniker of the rapper, also has plans to open his restaurant, Apache’s Bar in Mumbai and Delhi. “I have a club in Birmingham, somewhat like a Hard Rock Café. I can see Mumbai has opened up to a lot of live music venues now, and it would be great to contribute to this,” he says.
