I'm making my kind of music: Gourov Dasgupta

Gourov Dasgupta, music director of Summer 2007, is sure about what kind of music he wants to make, interviewed by Dhvani Merchant.

You debuted on the film scene with Dus Kahaaniyan and now you have Summer 2007 coming up.
Yeah, I've tried to incorporate my own sound. I grew up listening to bands like Megadeth and Metallica. So I've tried blending traditional Bollywood with rock and sufi. The result is music from a completely different space. I even have an item song.

An item song in a movie about five youngsters?
(Laughs) Yeah, they gave me the shivers too, initially but now I've gotten into the groove. Item songs are big in Bollywood and cannot be ignored. And this song fits in perfectly.

You must have been disappointed that Dus Kahaaniyan didn't do well?
The movie may not have done so well, but the music did well. The title track is still a chartbuster. It was a good break for me.

There were rumours that Sanjay Gupta and you were no longer on talking terms.
He was upset about a quote, I don't remember what. But it is all sorted now. We're buddies again.

I'm going to start working on his Acid Factory soon. Then, there's another movie, Bachpan. I have just completed the Great Indian Butterfly, again for White Feather Films.

Are Shweta Vijay and you an item now?
(Laughs) Shweta is my fiancée. So it's understandable that we're working together as a team. We're best friends. She's a wonderful singer. We make great music together.

Has life been an uphill struggle?
You bet. I ran away from home at 16 and lived on the road. I managed to get a foothold in the industry but it took a while to understand how the business works. Like all industries, it has its pros and cons. But at least I'm living out my dream. I'm making my kind of music.
