Love songs to the past

A new musical celebrating retro music to be premiered in the city soon; aims to pull off what the American comedy Glee manages to do on TV

From music that refuses to turn stale to fashion that keeps going back to the past, going retro is always bound to catch eyeballs. That’s what a city-based theatre group is counting on, as they prepare to showcase a retro musical with music from the ’60s to the ’90s.

Hoping to attract a Glee-loving generation, and encouraged by the response to their own production of The Sound of Music and Broadway and Beyond, Ace Productions is ready with its new musical that’ll celebrate music from Elvis Presley and The Beatles to the Bee Gees and ABBA. Titled Razzmatazz Retro and More, the play is a journey through the various eras of music and its most popular artistes.

Raell Padamsee, director and producer of the musical, says, “I was so tired of listening to trance and pop that I decided to put together a play to celebrate the music of the past.” Among other performers, the play will have four women singing popular Beatles tracks, and kids performing a Boney M medley.

Atai, one of the principal actors, says, “I play Jim Morrison and the role of an endearing Parsi called Mr Big, who presents a rewritten version of songs by Madonna and Billy Idol.”

And what is the audience they are hoping to draw in? “The music of that time has been revived by the American musical comedy, Glee. So I’m expecting a good reception across age groups,” responds Padamsee.
