A two-day festival organised by the National Centre for Performing Arts, One World Many Musics Celebrating Artistic Plurality’ will feature Delhi-based electronica duo Midival Punditz tonight, while multi-instrumentalist Shri, from Unired Kingdom, will perform tomorrow along with mandolin player U. Srinivas and drummer Lindsay D’Mello.
An attempt to bring together musical talent that derives its influences from varied cultures, the festival also aims to give the audience a taste of music that is also inherently collaborative in nature.
“The acts have been chosen for their efforts to combine world music with the Indian sound. Their unique equation between the bass, flute, tabla and electronica will satisfy the improviser in every listener,” says Dr. Suvarnalata Rao, head programming (Indian music), NCPA.
Shri, whose music combines traditional Indian classical with rock, jazz, drum and bass, will play the bass, tabla and flute at the concert.
“This performance will be full of simple and pure energy,” he says, adding, “Srinivas and I have performed before and it was a beautiful experience.”
Having collaborated with artistes such as Talvin Singh, British-Indian composer Nitin Sawhney and more recently with Rajasthan Roots, ask Shri what’s unique about musical tie-ups and he says, “It’s good when the musicians who collaborate have a basic idea about what they’re trying to achieve. The rest follows its own course and many-a-times, you find amazing surprises and magic coming alive in the process."
