Select Media Holding Pvt Ltd and Channel V will soon launch the Channel V Sound Box Music Awards, which will honour Bollywood as well as music from private albums.

Says Rajnish Khanuja of Select Media Holding, which is producing the awards, “Film awards basically encourage talent. We are doing the same thing. Everyone knows Pritam and his music. But if you give him an award and a trophy, he’ll feel appreciated and glad that his work has been honoured.”

No date has been finalised as yet, but the show will be held in a couple of months, the venue almost definitely being Mumbai.

According to Prem Kamath of Channel V, the awards will cover ‘all major technical and non-technical categories.’ A jury from within the industry will select the nominees and winners.

Kamath confirms this, saying, “A separate committee and a jury will be put together from the industry. It will be an eminent jury of well-known names consisting of both musicians and people from the industry. The final decision on winners will be theirs. Names haven’t been decided yet.”

Tough times

The music industry has been going through tough times due to illegal internet downloads and piracy. According to Kamath, the awards could help the dwindling fortunes of the industry.

He adds, “To me, the award represents a couple of things. One is bringing together the entire industry under one banner and having an award night, which will be the pride of the industry.” he says, adding, “Secondly, it will help recognise the existing artists, but also help in bringing new talent to the fore. Overall, it will help to strengthen the industry considerably.”
