Singer Shaan might be a big name in Bollywood, thanks to tracks such as It’s The Time To Disco (Kal Ho Naa Ho; 2003), Chand Sifarish (Fanaa; 2006), and Behti Hawa Sa Tha Wo (3 Idiots; 2009) among many others, but he is equally famous for his independent music. Tanha Dil (2000) and Bhul Ja (2000) are some of his popular non-film tracks. The 45-year-old singer, who recently released his independent single, Surilee, shares that the “fear of rejection” prevented him from getting back into the independent music arena.
“The fear of rejection has stayed with me all through my life, and that’s the reason why I haven’t been pro-active when it comes to these things, like releasing music independently,” says Shaan, who credits his wife, Radhika Mukherjee, for encouraging him to get back into the non-film space. “She sort of encouraged me and told me that I should do it. I’ve been singing for such a long time, so she told me to do it for myself, and to enjoy what I’m doing. She told me she’ll take care of me and back me on this” .
The singer feels that the internet is a “great medium”, and is helping musicians share their music directly with the listeners. “Film music is completely different; you have to work according to what the filmmakers want. Even in the independent space, some big companies get to dictate the kind of music, the kind of lyrics they want. But with platforms like YouTube and all, you, as a musician, have that opportunity to put out what you want to share with the fans,” he says.

{{/usCountry}}“I can compose one song in the blues genre, then switch to RnB (Rhythm and Blues), and so on. The audience will respond to it directly, and whether they like it or not, they will listen to it; thus, the musician gets the chance to express himself or herself freely,” adds Shaan.
