Musical flavours from all over South Asia will soon be showcased on a common stage at the sixth edition of the South Asian Bands Festival. Scheduled to take place in the first week of December, the lineup at the fest gets bigger this year.
Presented by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in collaboration with Ministry of External Affairs and NGO Seher, the festival will feature musicians from nine countries. “The aim is to present fresh talent each year. We want to bring those artists in the limelight who haven’t been over-exposed in India,” says Sanjeev Bhargava, festival director. India will be represented by a host of artists including Bollywood singer-composer Clinton Cerejo, who’s worked in films such as Vicky Donor, Saat Khoon Maaf and Wake Up Sid.
Representing Delhi will be the band Nasya, while Tough on Tobacco, Shaair + Func and Shkabang will represent Mumbai. Digital Suicide from Assam and Galeej Gurus from Bangalore will also perform at the fest. “We will release an album in February next year, so our lineup is going to be from it. These festivals provide a platform for bands to socialise and form bonds,” says Ashish Chauhan, drummer with Nasya.
One of the most sought-after acts at the fest will be that of Noori from Lahore, Pakistan. Formed in 1996, the band is best known for their singles, Jana Tha Humne and Tum Hans Diye. Other rock bands are Souls (Bangladesh), Thriloka (Sri Lanka), E-SA & His Troupe (Maldives), The Likens (Bhutan), Blaze (Myanmar), District Unknown (Afghanistan) and Jindabaad (Nepal).
