If you caught New York- based band The Xylopholks perform in the city last year, you probably know that pink gorillas can play bass. This time, another band— The Red Band from Israel—demonstrates how the Muppets too can croon like Morrison.

For a band that emerged from a popular Israeli show, it is no surprise that The Red Band invites comparisons with virtual outfit The Gorillaz, as well the American TV series, Family Guy.

“It’s a story of Red Orbach, who plays with his band Pancho on the guitar and Lefty on keyboards. They are ageing rock stars and were very big in the ’60s, but currently, they play covers of popular songs and take pot-shots at everyday society,” says Israeli Consul General, Orna Sagiv, who has been instrumental in getting the act to perform in India. “This is their first performance in here, and it has been received with so much warmth,” she adds.

Somewhat like a band of ventriloquists, the band features three musicians carefully hidden behind the larger-than-life muppets. Besides being popular on the local scene, they were also chosen to open for Deep Purple’s show in Tel-Aviv.

And before you dismiss them as a gimmicky act, Orna points out that it’s the onstage repartee that wins the band many fans. “In Mumbai, they joked about the traffic, being as popular as Kareena Kapoor and much more,” she says.

Today, the band will perform for differently-abled students at Sophia College. “It will be a bit toned-down this time. The band is known to be quite nasty when it comes to their humour, so the gig today will be more song-based and the humour will be aimed to bring a smile to children,” adds Orna.

The Red Band will perform for students of SPJ Sadhana School today at Sophia College, Breach Candy.
