Even as commercially viable sub-genres in electronic dance music (EDM) such as house and dubstep rule roost at most nightclubs, UK’s DJ Solarstone feels that pure trance has no takers anymore. Having made a mark as a producer during the nascent days of trance music in the mid-nineties, Richard Mowatt, who is better known by his above-mentioned moniker, feels that EDM has changed for the worse.

“There is snobbery in EDM. Currently, house dominates the scene, while forms such as pure trance are nowhere. In fact, the trance scene has become segregated with different styles coming up,” says Solarstone, who has recently released his third studio album, Pure. The project features 13 tracks, some of which have witnessed collaborations with artistes such as Egyptian trance duo Aly & Fila, Italian producer Giuseppe Ottaviani besides vocalists like Betsie Larkin, Clare Stagg among others.

But the key to his success, says Solarstone, is in staying unperturbed. “Trance is a way of life. I’m not embarrassed to be producing pure trance as I believe in what I do, and have never strayed away from my roots,” he adds.
