Tulsi Kumar: Bollywood can easily typecast you if you are a singer

The Goggle Song singer Tulsi Kumar feels that singers have to keep reinventing themselves and sing different genres to avoid getting stereotyped in the industry.

Tulsi Kumar has spent over a decade as a playback singer in the Hindi film industry. And there’s one thing she has learnt for sure — “Bollywood can easily typecast you if you are a singer,” she says. To avoid getting stereotyped, Tulsi tries to take up all kinds of songs to sing, even though softer tracks suit her voice and taste.

Tulsi Kumar says soft, sad and romantic numbers are her forte.

“My forte is sad romantic numbers, and I absolutely love singing them. But I’ve sung all kinds of songs, including peppy, dance numbers as I want to keep experimenting,” she says.

The singer made a name for herself with the romantic song, Tum Jo Aaye, in the film Once Upon a Time in Mumbai (2010). Tulsi calls the song — also featuring singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan — a “turning point” in her career. “The love and fame that I received after that song has been special. It’s still played everywhere [at events, functions etc]. That indeed is special, and the reason why, I believe, I’m good at singing these kind of songs,” she says.

But like she said, she’s experimenting. And her two latest offerings have been dance numbers — Mara Highway star (an independent single featuring rapper Raftaar) and the Goggle Song in the upcoming film, Mubarakan, starring Arjun Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. After back-to-back peppy numbers, she wants to release a very “different” single. “That’s the beauty of releasing singles. You can change the style with every song you come up with,” says Tulsi, adding, “A new song should be out pretty soon!”
