AR Rahman, whose first Hindi film as a music composer was Mani Ratnam’s Roja (1992), will collaborate with the film-maker for the 11th time for his upcoming film. Talking about their 24-year-old creative association, Rahman says, “Each movie we worked on was different. The journey was interesting for both of us. On some level, it is a process of self-torture, as we try and reinvent ourselves.”
However, last week, when we spoke to him, the musical maestro was busy with another project. At his Chennai studio, he was mixing his latest record, which has Indian cricketer Virat Kohli rapping. So what happens when two legends from such diverse fields come together for a creative collaboration? Rahman, who confesses that he doesn’t follow cricket and hasn’t seen Virat play, says the recording session was an “amazing experience”. “I had heard great things about him. We finished the recording session in two hours,” says Rahman.

If Rahman is to be believed, Virat is almost “pitch perfect” even in the recording studio. He says the ace batsman came in “good spirit and was in tune”. “We had a template for the song ready. These days, we can experiment a lot and do anything with the voice. So, currently, we are working on the mixing stage,” says the award-winning composer, adding that the anthem for the Premier Futsal League, unlike other sports theme songs, will be “peppy and upbeat”. Rahman also says there is an element of humour in the lyrics, but adds that music buffs would have to “wait for the song to unveil to enjoy it”.
