The normally arid Bundelkhand region and other districts located on the banks of the Ganga were staring at a flood threat. Different regions in Allahabad, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Ballia districts were flooded as the Ganga flowed above the danger mark.
Irrigation department officials said the Ganga had touched the danger level in Farrukhabad and Mirzapur districts while the river Ken was flowing above danger level in Banda district. The Yamuna was flowing near the danger level in Mathura and river Sharda had crossed the danger mark in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Principal secretary (irrigation) Suresh Chandra said, “All the district magistrates have been directed to remain alert and maintain vigil on the embankments. The irrigation department engineers have been directed to repair the embankments eroded by rivers.”
