THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One of the two Dalit sisters, who were arrested for allegedly assaulting a CPI(M) workers in Thalasserry (Kannur district) and later granted bail, has been admitted to a hospital in a serious condition after she consumed excessive pills.
The arrest of two under non-bailable charges triggered a big protest and the National Commission for Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe has sought a report from the state police chief.
The issue has invited enough embarrassment for the CPI(M) government and CM Pinarayi Vijayan feigned ignorance about the incident when asked about it.
The arrest snowballed into a political controversy with both the Congress and BJP branding at as the latest instance of politics of intolerance being practised by the CPI(M) in its stronghold Kannur.
Last week National Women Commission chair person Lalitha Kumaranmangalam and party spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi had visited t he Pinarayi, CM’s village and surrounding areas, that witnessed large-scale post-poll violence.
The girls were summoned to Thalasserry police station on Friday where a case was registered against them for allegedly barging into the CPI(M) office and manhandling three party workers.
However the girls claimed that they went to the party office to confront some workers who frequently embarrassed them by calling them by their caste name.
However, the girls were verbally abused. A police officer said that they were pressurised to book the girls under stringent provisions.
