DEHRADUN: An upper caste government teacher slit the throat of a Dalit youth for touching wheat flour in a village in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand, 400 km from here on Thursday. The teacher, Lalit Karnatak, who came to grind wheat at a chakki (grindstone) was annoyed by the presence of Dalit youth Sohan Ram, 35, in Bheta village. Karnatak said the wheat would turn impure due to Ram’s presence. A war of words ensued and the teacher, who was carrying a sickle, slit Ram’s throat, killing him on the spot. Karnatak was later arrested.
