NEW DELHI: A Congress Delegation met the Election Commission on Monday and demanded cancellation of the recently-concluded Rajya Sabha election in Haryana. The Congress also threatened that it would take the matter to the court.
According to sources, the EC has sought a report from the state but it is unlikely that the elections would be countermanded after the declaration of the results.
The delegation was led by general secretary BK Hariprasad and consisted of Congress-backed candidate for Haryana RS polls RK Anand and lawyer Vivek Tankha along with the state unit chief Ashok Tanwar.
The delegation alleged that a conspiracy was hatched by the BJP to undermine the electoral process. Claiming that the poll was manipulated under a “deeprooted conspiracy”, the delegation also demanded action against those who conspired to rig the poll process.
As many as 14 Congress votes were rejected during the election on account of the MLAs not using the right pen to mark their preference, leaving ballot unmarked and showing their vote to an unauthorised person.
But Congress spokesperson Anand Shar ma refuted the reasons for the cancellation of votes.
He said: “Voters don’t take their colour or pens while casting votes. Even the mobile phones are kept. You go inside the polling booth and pen is there tied with small string, you tick and leave it,” said Sharma.
Calling it a “rigged and hijacked election”, Sharma demanded a full-fledged examination of all facts including video g raphic evidence to expose the conspiracy
The Congress leaders, however, emphasised that the party MLAs did not sabotage the polls. “The Election Commission records prove these MLAs belong not to one faction but to the Congress in all. Votes of some of the staunch Hooda supporters were found to be valid,” Sharma said in response to if former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s followers didn’t support RK Anand’s candidature.
