NEW DELHI: The navy on Wednesday formally inducted a locally-made heavy-weight torpedo designed to kill submarines, making India the eighth country in the world to have designed and developed such an underwater weapon. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar handed over the DRDO-developed Varunastra to navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba in a symbolic ceremony attended by top naval officers and military scientists. The Defence Research and Development Organisation undertook the development of the ship launched weapon in 2005.
