Rinku Devi, her nine-month-old daughter Mithi, and husband Rahul, a vegetable dealer, were returning from her parents’ home on a bike after inviting them for Rahul’s birthday when they saw two men trying to loot a truck driver. When Rahul protested, they attacked him with a pistol and beat him. Rinku tried to save Rahul, but was also beaten up and pushed on to the divider, where she hit her head.

She was rushed to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) where doctors pronounced her brought dead while Mithi, who suffered injuries after being thrown on the road, was said to be out of danger.

Locals beat up one of the assailants, Azhar Imam, after Rahul caught hold of him and handed him over to police.

A hunt was on for the other accused Mohammed Asif, Sonari DSP, Kailash Karmali, told HT on Saturday. “We will seek a warrant against him on Tuesday if he is still absconding,” he said.

Imam told police that it was an accident as their motorcycle collided with the couple’s bike while they were trying to overtake. Witnesses, however, confirmed the looting bid.

Rahul and Rinku had gotten married only two years ago, police said.
