The victim, Dimpi Verma, is the nephew of a utility service provider, Babu Verma, and had come on Babu’s behalf to deposit the cash, which was in denominations of 100, 500 and 2,000.

“These were to be deposited with the help of four pay-in slips, but my nephew had only two photocopies of the ID card. A man followed him inside the branch and asked for help in filling up a slip. My nephew did not oblige him. Later, when he stepped out of the branch, there were two men, including the one who had asked him for help inside the branch. They asked him to fill up their pay-in slip, but he refused them again,” Bablu said.

The police took Dimpi to different areas inside the branch and nearby lanes, and questioned him at length about the incident. There were no senior police officers at the spot, as most police personnel and administrative staff were attending an event to mark the conclusion of traffic month.

“There have been certain contradictions in the statements given by the victim. However, we have asked our officers to thoroughly investigate the matter and take up the complaint from the victim. An FIR will be lodged and the matter will be investigated at the earliest,” Salmantaj Patil, superintendent of police (city), said.
