Ghaziabad agency opens Sahibabad underpass, expected to take vehicles off Mohan Nagar

The underpass is a three-lane road and will provide smooth passage to commuters moving from Rajendra Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and Shalimar Garden to the Site-4 industrial area from where they can move to Vaishali, Vasundhara and CISF Road, and further towards Noida.

The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has opened a much-awaited underpass near Sahibabad railway station. The facility will provide a major relief to commuters travelling from Sahibabad and neighbouring areas to the trans-Hindon region and will save them from a detour of at least six kilometres.

The underpass will cater to vehicles such as two-wheelers, cars and school buses but trucks will not be allowed. This is the second such underpass which has been developed and opened by GDA to ease traffic flow below the busy Delhi-Ghaziabad railway section. (Sakib Ali/HT Photo)

The underpass is a three-lane road and will provide smooth passage to commuters moving from Rajendra Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and Shalimar Garden to the Site-4 industrial area from where they can move to Vaishali, Vasundhara and CISF Road, and further towards Noida.

Earlier, commuters moving to trans-Hindon areas had to travel to Mohan Nagar intersection and then use the Mohan Nagar flyover to reach Vasundhara. Now, commuters can cut down on travel time as well as distance, as they can bypass the busy Mohan Nagar intersection.

“The facility is complete and has been opened for a trial run. Some work, such as beautification, is pending but will be completed soon. A sump well is also being installed to ensure that there is no waterlogging at the underpass during rain. The project was started in 2014-15 but its completion was delayed due to various bottlenecks,” said AK Gupta, officiating chief engineer, GDA.

The underpass will cater to vehicles such as two-wheelers, cars and school buses but trucks will not be allowed. This is the second such underpass which has been developed and opened by GDA to ease traffic flow below the busy Delhi-Ghaziabad railway section, which virtually divides the city into cis-Hindon and trans-Hindon areas.

The other underpass was opened by GDA at Vasundhara, which provides commuters easy passage from city areas to Vasundhara, Indirapuram, NH-24 and Noida, also bypassing Mohan Nagar intersection.

Another project that will provide a relief to commuters — the grade separator (flyover) at Meerut crossing — is expected to be completed in the next week. This will allow commuters to move seamlessly on GT Road towards Mohan Nagar and also ensure that the traffic from city moves on the grade separator, without clashing with those moving on the newly constructed NH-24 to NH-58 Link Road.

“Black top carpeting work on the road surface is pending. If there is no rain, the road will be laid in a week, after which it will be opened,” Gupta said.
