According to police officials, the victim Narendra Kumar, from Chhattarpur in Delhi, was driving his ambulance to Delhi with his uncle, Ravi. The ambulance overturned after it was trapped between two other vehicles near a petrol pump on the highway.

“Ravi was trapped inside when their ambulance overturned and Narendra was trying to pull him out of the damaged vehicle. He was doing this standing on the side of the highway while other vehicles were also passing by. Soon, an incoming mini-truck crushed him,” said Neeraj Singh, station house officer, Kavi Nagar police station.

“The mini-truck also hit the divider and came to a halt, after which its driver fled the spot. The victim was rushed to a hospital, but was declared dead. The injured man trapped inside the ambulance was also pulled out and rushed to the trauma centre of All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi,” Singh added.

The victim’s brother, Harish Kumar, said, “My brother died instantly as he was badly crushed by the mini-truck. The police said the erring driver fled the spot, but will be traced soon with the help of the truck’s registration number. My brother had taken a patient from Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi to Barabanki and was returning when he met with the accident.

“Since Barabanki is far off, he had also taken along our uncle, Ravi, who was injured during the first accident,” he said, adding that Narendra got married two years ago and had a seven-month-old daughter.

The police later sent Narendra’s body for postmortem and took the complaint from his family members.
