Ghaziabad authority directs residents to take gensets off govt land

The Ghaziabad development authority (GDA) on Tuesday started issuing notices to property owners who have installed diesel generator sets outside their residences on government land. The owners have been asked to remove the generator sets and place them at the periphery of the house, failing which the authority will initiate action against them.

Officials said that they served the notice to owners of around 100 owners of generator sets in the Indirapuram zone, which comprises Indirapuram, Kaushambi, Vaishali and Vasundhara.

“The house owners have been served notices and asked to place generator sets inside the house. If they don’t comply, the authority will take action under the provisions of the UP Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973. We are identifying generator sets on government land in other areas as well,” said Ravindra Godbole, secretary, GDA.

Besides the Indirapuram zone, the authority’s enforcement department has also identified nearly 80 instances of generator sets installed on roads of Kavi Nagar, Nehru Nagar and Raj Nagar, among others.

Earlier, the authority had also asked the residents to do away with ramps outside houses that were constructed by blocking drains, that too on government land. The drive was started by the authority’s vice-chairperson from outside her residence on May 8.

“There had been some opposition to the action earlier, but residents must face the fact that government land must be free from encroachments. We have asked our members to identify such encroachments and send us a list. It will be forwarded to the authority,” said Colonel (retd) TP Tyagi of the Ghaziabad RWA federation.

“Installation of generator sets involves concretising a part of the land for placing it. Besides obstructing traffic, it also prevents groundwater recharge,” he said.

Installation of generator sets on roads and government land has been a common practice in residential societies of Ghaziabad. The practice has gone unchecked so far.

Apart from the generator sets, the authority has also started a drive to identify ramps, fencing and permanent constructions taken up on government land. “These are being identified and residents have been asked to remove them at the earliest,” Godbole said.
