A woman drove her car into the Hindon river on Sunday morning after she lost control of the vehicle. The woman, who didn’t want to be identified, was reportedly learning how to drive on the unmetalled road under the elevated road being constructed near the river. She was being taught driving by a relative at the time.

Police said that the resident of Sector 15, Vasundhara, was driving a Maruti 800 when she lost control of the steering wheel and drove into river Hindon around 8am on Sunday. They added that the car, coming from the Kanavani Bridge near Sector 7, Vasundhara, was nearing the Sai Temple in Sector 15 when the incident occurred.

“The woman was accompanied by a relative who was teaching her how to drive. When the car fell into the river, both of them jumped out the window while the car was left behind,” said Gorakhnath Yadav, station house officer, Indirapuram police station.

According to him, the woman informed her family members about the incident. “They then informed the Prahladgarhi police post in-charge about the incident, after which a crane was used to fish out the car. The woman and her relative did not sustain any major injuries,” said Yadav, adding that the family members did not lodge a police complaint and do not want to be identified

“The front portion, including the windshield, bonnet and bumper, has been completely shattered as the car probably hit a rock on the river bed. The woman’s family members took the car along with them,” said Atul Kumar Yadav, circle officer, Indirapuram.

He added that since no public property was damaged, no action has been taken so far.

“The road where the incident occurred belongs to the Ghaziabad development authority (GDA) and no damage has been caused to the property. However, if the GDA gives a complaint regarding destruction of property, if any, action will be taken,” he added.

On his part, the Indirapuram SHO said that he will write to the GDA that the unmetalled road should be closed from both ends to prevent vehicular entry.

“The road beneath the under-construction elevated road has become a popular spot for people learning to drive. However, it is a dangerous spot as it is adjacent to the river. Hence, we will write to the GDA on Monday to close the open ends of the road,” said Yadav.
