The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has decided to continue with the rescue operation for another 24 hours since the district officials are unclear about the number of people who were in the two Noida buildings at the time of the incident.

The search and rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continued on Thursday and is expected to go on for one more day as the personnel on Thursday morning retrieved the ninth body from the incident site in Greater Noida’s Shahberi village.

“The soil of the area is not thick binding and the foundation was probably laid without proper soil testing. Usually, in areas of Khadar (river zones), a lot of measures have to be taken for laying the foundation,” said PK Srivastava, commandant of the eighth battalion of the NDRF.

The areas of Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar also fall under seismic zone IV and big developers lay much emphasis on a strong foundation during the construction of the high-rise.

The NDRF has decided to continue with the operation for another 24 hours since the NDRF or the district officials are unclear about the number of people who were in the two buildings at the time of the incident.

“Since we don’t have the count of people who were in the two buildings, we will continue removal of debris for one more day and see if any more bodies are trapped,” Srivastava added.

The officials said that they have been able to remove nearly 60% of the debris from the site and a search is still on for other probable victims.

“The ninth victim was a labourer, whose body was retrieved from the debris of the under-construction building on Thursday morning. The bodies of other four labourers were also retrieved from the same building. The family of Shiv Trivedi was retrieved from the occupied building. We are scanning for other victims from the debris of the under-construction building,” Srivastava added.

The officials said that the victims probably died as they inhaled a lot of dust which choked oxygen supply and also due to injuries sustained due to falling of heavy beams.

The retrieval of one of the bodies of the labourers took nearly five hours as it was trapped in the debris, beams and iron bars.

According to officials, the first retrieval was made around 2.13am on July 18 while second, third and fourth bodies were retrieved around 2.25am, 7.02am and 5.10pm, respectively, on the same day.
