All women passengers who board inter-city or inter-state buses run by the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) within the 24-hour time frame can avail of the free travel scheme, officials said.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced free travel for all women from August 6 midnight to August 7 midnight on the occasion of Rakshabandhan.

All women passengers who board inter-city or inter-state buses run by the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) within the 24-hour time frame can avail of the free travel scheme, officials said.

The corporation runs nearly 12,000 buses in the state, including 992 in the Ghaziabad region.

“The free travel scheme on the festival has been announced and a formal direction will be received shortly from the state officials. On festival days, the ridership of women passenger increases from 15% to 40% and the scheme will benefit women on the festival day. It will be applicable for all segment of buses such as ordinary, AC, non-AC etc,” said PK Bose, regional manager, UPSRTC (Ghaziabad region).

The scheme has been launched for the first time, he said. “Earlier we provided gifts to women passengers who boarded our Pink Line women-only AC buses to Lucknow. We previously offered free travel to women passengers on Women’s Day. This scheme on ‘Rakshabandhan’ will be a major sop for women passengers,” Bose said.

A large number of women travel from one place to another on Rakshabandhan.

According to official estimates, the revenue on Rakshabandhan will be around Rs 1.5 crore in Ghaziabad region while the ‘free travel scheme’ is likely to cost an estimated Rs 45 lakh. This amount, the officials said, will be reimbursed to the corporation by the state government.

The UPSRTC operates inter-city and inter-state buses from Anand Vihar ISBT in Delhi and Kaushambi ISBT in Ghaziabad.

At present, the UPSRTC buses make nearly 600 bus trips from Anand Vihar and nearly 300 from Kaushambi terminal per day.

They operate nearly 100 buses from Ghaziabad terminal, ferrying passengers in nearly 300 trips every day.
