Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Deepa Malik on Tuesday for scripting history by winning a silver medal in shotput at the 2016 Rio Paralympics Games.
“Well done Deepa! Your silver at the Paralympics makes the nation very proud. Congratulations,” the Prime Minister said in a message.
After bagging the silver on Monday, the excited 45-year-old, who is the oldest in the Indian contingent in Rio to win a medal, said that she wants to use the medal to support women with disabilities in India.

{{/usCountry}}Mariyappan Thangavelu won the gold medal in the Men’s high jump T42 category on Friday with fellow Indian Varun Bhati taking bronze in the same event.
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar too lauded Malik’s feat. In a statement, Khattar said, “ I extend my heartiest congratulations to Deepa Malik. The daughter of Haryana has made the state and the country proud.”
“If it was Sakshi Malik, who brought the country first medal in wrestling in Olympics, Deepa has become the first woman athlete from India to win a medal in Paralympics. Our daughters are bringing laurels and we are proud of them”, Khattar added.
Under the new sports policy of Haryana, the state government would give Rs 4 crore to Malik for winning silver medal in Paralympics.
