Twelve-year-old Tamil Nadu girl AV Jayaveena made a big splash towards stardom, even as swimmers rewrote four records in the 34th National Games.
The day also saw two big upsets when Asian Games bronze medalist Virdhawal Khade faltered in the 200m butterfly to settle for a silver, while Richa Mishra aiming for her seventh gold returned empty-handed in the 50m breastroke, where Jayaveena hogged the limelight.
Jayaveena, a class VII student, claimed a silver medal when she finished behind Maharashtra’s Poorva Shetye.
In women’s volleyball, National champions Kerala defeated Karnataka 25-15, 25-20, 25-8 to set up a summit clash against Bengal, who defeated Andhra Pradesh 25-15, 25-21 and 26-24, in the other semifinal.
In women’s football competition, Manipur mauled Assam 10-0 while West Bengal annihilated Tripura 26-0, to move into the semifinals.
Services continued to impress in the dressage team Equestrian event, winning their second gold medal. In shooting, World champion Tejaswini Sawant shot 590 out of 600 en route to the gold medal in 50m prone event. Team gold also went to Maharashtra while Samresh Jung shot 584 to win gold in centre-fire pistol.
In the 50m rifle prone, Sanjeev Rajput of Services shot 690.6 points en route to the gold.
In trap event, B Sodhi shot 138 (117 in the qualifying) to win gold and improve the Zorawar Singh’s four year old record of 123 (105 in qualifying). Representing Punjab, Manavjit Sandhu shot 136, while Anwar Sultan (UP) shot 136.
