India’s overall performance in the freestyle event of Senior Asian Wrestling was praiseworthy. With two gold, one silver and six bronze, they surpassed last
edition’s tally of one gold and four bronze. Overall, they were placed on top.
Men
Amit Kumar
(Freestyle, 55kg)
The 20-year-old grappler won the first gold for India. The Delhi-based junior Asian champion in 2011 held his nerve in the final to put the hosts on the right track. He had finished fifth in the 2012 Olympics.
Bajrang (FS 60kg):
The teenager from Haryana made his debut in the Asian meet by default because his senior Yogeshwar Dutt had to quit due to injury. The Asian jr medallist proved a point by winning bronze.
Amit (FS 66kg):
The Haryana wrestler had replaced injured Olympian Sushil Kumar in the event. He proved a point by winning gold.His efforts helped India top the field.
Hitender (120kg):
The burly Haryana wrestler clinched bronze on debut. The 21-year-old comes from a family that has passion for wrestling.
Women
Vinesh (51kg):
During her leisure time she loves cooking.She is also passionate about wrestling which is in her blood. Despite good form, she could only clinch bronze.
Babita (55kg):
Wrestling is also in her blood. The world championship bronze medallist, however, could not go beyond the bronze-medal round.
Navjot Kaur (67kg):
The 22-year-old Punjab girl has a good record, but the former Asian jr champion could only win silver.
Jyoti (72kg):
The God-fearing 23-year-old Delhi girl was delighted at winning bronze on home turf. Her next goal is gold in the global event.
Geetika Jakhar (63kg):
The Hisar girl had changed the face of wrestling by wining bronze in 2006 Asiad. In Delhi she won bronze.
