Davis Cup will return to Chandigarh after a gap of 19 years when the city hosts the Asia/Oceania relegation playoff tie from September 14-16.
India will play New Zealand to remain in the Asia/Oceania Group I after failing to make the World Group playoff, losing 2-3 against Uzbekistan last week.
"We are proud to be hosting a Davis Cup tie after 1993," said Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) chairman, Rajan Kashyap, on Wednesday. The CLTA had earlier hosted two ties - against Japan in 1990, which India won 4-1, and the World Group semifinals against Australia in 1993 which the hosts lost 0-5.
"The earlier ties had been held on grass but this time, matches will be played on hardcourt.
"We are resurfacing six hardcourts within the next two months in a move to upgrade our facilities," said Kashyap.
"CLTA had requested the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to be able to hold the New Zealand tie," said Col Ranbir Chauhan, AITA's executive director. "It's a wonderful stadium and the city is very enthusiastic about tennis."
