A smile and a handshake with his caddie at the end of the 18th hole before a measured walk towards the clubhouse would sum up a satisfactory day in office for any professional golfer including Karanjit Singh Sandhu.

The only difference on Wednesday was the Delhi-based golfer had just registered his best-ever performance on the pro circuit with a seven-under 63 to take the first day honours at the CG Open golf here.
The 29-year-old, languishing at 40th spot in the PGTI Order of Merit, showed the maturity needed to master the tight fairways and the faster greens to open up a three-shot lead over Ashok Kumar, Dinesh Raghuvanshi and Sujjan Singh.
While most golfers struggled to control their tee shots, Sandhu was on a roll, coming up with two exquisite chip-putts on the first and fourth holes, and sinking a 12-footer on the second.
The day got better for the younger brother of champion trap-shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu, as he birdied five of the nine holes coming in, that included digging out of the bunker on the 16th and the 18th.
