The functioning of all six government-run medical colleges in Biphar was crippled on Monday after junior doctors went on an indefinite strike demanding arrest of an RJD MLA, whose police bodyguards allegedly fired at interns of a medical college in Gaya on Sunday and injured three of them.
The condition of two of the injured interns is said to be critical. The two bodyguards - Ashok Kumar and Abhinandan Kumar - were arrested and placed under suspension but Surendra Prasad Yadav, the RJD MLA from Belaganj (Gaya), had not been arrested at the time of going to press.
The MLA's bodyguards reportedly opened fire at the Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College Hospital after a scuffle between Yadav and the medicos. The MLA had gone to the hospital to enquire about a relative who was admitted there.
Even as health services remained paralysed, the state stared at prospect of another strike on the issue - from police personnel. The Bihar Policemen's Association demanded immediate release of the bodyguards and threatened that over 65,000 police personnel would go on a statewide agitation.
