A report on the Well Being Index (WBI) and Female Security Index (FSI) for India released by Tata Strategic Management Group (TSMG) on Tuesday said that some of the districts in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, eastern UP, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh scored well in female security index even though they were considered ‘bad’ or ‘worst’ in terms of well being index.
Altogether six districts of Bihar, two of Jharkhand and seven of Orissa, figured prominently in the bottom 20 of the well-being index, reflecting poor quality of life in the region.
The report took into account parameters such as gender ratio, rape cases and dowry deaths to form the female security index. “Some of the best-off parts of India (Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and western UP), as reflected through Well Being Index, have the worst Female Security Index. Likewise, some bad WBI parts (Orissa, eastern UP, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar) have good FSIs indicating better security for women,” said Harsha Kapoor, practice head, analytics solutions, Tata Strategic Management Group. “The findings are counterintuitive. There seems to be no co-relation between well being and security for women,” she added.

The study covered 593 districts in the country and found a clear divide between north India on one hand, and south and east India on the other. Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi have the worst Female Security Index while Mumbai, its suburbs and Thane, have the best Well Being Index. But they have low Female Security Index because of low gender ratio.

{{/usCountry}}Tata Strategic has created the WBI using eight critical categories carefully selected to form the index on the basis of their ability to explain the well being of households broadly covering all aspects of well being. The categories include home amenities, kitchen facilities, education, hygiene, entertainment, communication, transportation and healthcare.
