Police sources said when the city bus arrived at ROB, the driver tried to overtake a vehicle leading to the accident. One of the injured persons was admitted to PMCH in a serious condition. Eyewitnesses said they heard cries of passengers trapped inside. Passersby broke the windowpanes of the bus and rescued the passengers.

Daily commuters rued that lack of government transport forced them to depend on private operators. "Government run city buses do not maintain adequate frequency and often arrive late. The few private bus operators in the area ply at high speed, putting the lives of passengers at risk," said Chandrasekhar, a student at a private engineering college.

Police personnel from Kankarbagh, Gandhi Maidan and Jakkanpur rushed to the spot and pacified the demonstrators.
