The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has appealed to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar not to make fun of the poor masses in the name of ‘Vikas Yatra’ involving an expenditure of Rs 1 crore.
Branding this a ‘rural escapade’ of the Chief Minister, RJD national general secretary-cum-spokesman, Shyam Rajak, addressing a Press conference, said the ‘Vikas Yatra’ was wastage of public money in the name of development. “The Chief Minister’s entourage will be housed in 1 Durbari tent, 15 elaborate Swiss cottages, 15 I P tents, 32 other tents, with 1 kitchen room, I generator room, 7 urinals, 32 toilets, 22 bathrooms and 16 sentry posts on a sprawling 10 bigha plot”, Rajak charged.
Citing the kind of ‘screening’ that goes on in Janata Durbars, Rajak said Nitish was actually distancing himself from the poor.
“The rural masses and the poor would get nothing out of this Yatra”, he asserted. The RJD was educating masses on the futility of the ‘Vikas Yatra’, he added.
Rajak disputed the State Government’s claims of a check in crime in Bihar by rattling off figures released by the Union Home Ministry. He said the incidents of rape had gone up to 1,555 till November 2008 from 985 in 2003, 1,390 in 2004 and 1,147 in 2005. Crime against women had also shown a rise from 5,900 in 2003 to 7,548 in 2008, he charged, adding that crime against children rose from 56 in 2003 to 675 in 2008.

{{/usCountry}}Similarly, dowry deaths rose from 909 in 2003 to 1,172 in 2008. The number of court cases pending investigation was over 1.40 lakh in 2003, and by 2008 they rose to 2.01 lakh, Rajak stated.
