Chhele bhasan' : In a small circular pond adjacent to the Ghutiyari Sharif Mazar near Kolkata children are let afloat in huge cauldrons. Parents from near and far come with the belief that in doing so they would be putting their child into the care of the resident saint. People on the bank use their hands to create a circular current in the water. The child soon completes its maiden voyage, amused or crying its lungs out; the parents gather it and go home: assured that the spirit of the holy man will forever continue to look out for the child.( Photo by Sandipan Mukherjee)
