A protest by women students against an incident of molestation on the Banaras Hindu University campus in Varanasi turned violent. The university called in the police, who lathi-charged the students. In the aftermath of the protest, the university was shut four days early for Dusshera holidays, FIRs were registered against 1,000 students and protests spilled across party lines till Delhi.
