A major portion of the more than a century-old Grand Hotel was destroyed in a fire that broke out late on Monday night in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla. Three floors of the recently renovated Mayo Block was gutted in the fire, which broke out at the heritage Grand Hotel’s reception at about 12:30am and was doused at around 3am on Tuesday morning. The government of Odisha revised the death toll caused by Cyclone Fani to 64 with Puri accounting for 39 deaths. CM Naveen Patnaik announced that all families whose houses were damaged due to the cyclone would get a pucca house. As per preliminary assessment, more than 5.08 lakh houses were left damaged, after winds exceeding 250 kmph battered Puri and Khurda affecting 1.4 crore people. (Asit Kumar/ AFP File)

The number of yaks that died of starvation in north Sikkim could be 500 or more, authorities have said after talking to herders who graze the animals in Mukuthang Valley in the state near the border with China. On Saturday, the figure had stood at 300 yaks after herders came down to lower altitudes to save themselves from the cold, leaving flocks behind. (AFP File)
