A new bench will be set up to hear the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi title suit before January 10, the Supreme Court said today, putting off decisions on requests to fast track the case. A 46-year-old Sri Lankan woman has become the third woman to offer prayers at the Sabarimala temple in Kerala after the Supreme Court ordered the end of a traditional ban on women of menstrual age entering the shrine. Two women in their 40s had defied the centuries-old ban on Wednesday, sparking violent protests and shutdown in Kerala. A total of 1319 people have been arrested following Thursday’s shutdown. The Supreme Court asked the government to submit a status report on steps taken and the progress of the operation to rescue the 15 miners stuck in an illegal mine in Meghalaya since December 13. Two people have died of swine flu in Jodhpur while 44 positive fresh cases were reported today, mostly from Jodhpur, Jaipur, Udaipur and Ajmer, according to the health department. The Supreme Court today questioned the government over the delay in appointment of the Lokpal, directing it to file a fresh affidavit listing the steps taken in the last four months. The bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul expressed its displeasure with the delay in appointing the anti-corruption ombudsman. A major fire broke out in Platinum polymerchemical company in Badlapur MIDC area this morning. Six fire tenders rushed to the spot. The fire also led to blasts in the chemical drums in the company which caused panic like situation. There is no report about any injury or casualty in the incident.
