A 46-year-old Sri Lankan woman has become the third woman to offer prayers at the Sabarimala temple in Kerala after the Supreme Court ordered the end of a traditional ban on women of menstrual age entering the shrine. Two women in their 40s had defied the centuries-old ban on Wednesday, sparking violent protests and shutdown in Kerala. A total of 1319 people have been arrested following Thursday’s shutdown. The Supreme Court asked the government to submit a status report on steps taken and the progress of the operation to rescue the 15 miners stuck in an illegal mine in Meghalaya since December 13. Appearing to be satisfied with the efforts taken by the Centre, the court said it will now hear the matter on January 7. (AFP File)

The bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul expressed its displeasure with the delay in appointing the anti-corruption ombudsman. A major fire broke out in Platinum polymerchemical company in Badlapur MIDC area this morning. Six fire tenders rushed to the spot. The fire also led to blasts in the chemical drums in the company which caused panic like situation. There is no report about any injury or casualty in the incident. At least 20 top educational institutions in the country will get state-of-the-art hostels to attract foreign students as part of the government’s ‘Study in India’ initiative. The Union human resource development (HRD) ministry is “aggressively wooing” foreign students as part of the initiative as the government wants to increase their number now to at least 0.2 million by 2023.
