Gynecological health is a cornerstone of women's overall well-being yet many women across the globe experience infections that can be uncomfortable, distressing and sometimes even alarming. In an interview with Zarafshan Shiraz of HT Lifestyle, Dr Disha Thakwani, Senior Consultant, Gynecologist at HCL Healthcare, said, “Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans in the vagina. While this fungus is naturally present in the vaginal flora, factors like antibiotic use, hormonal changes, or a weakened immune system can lead to its proliferation." (RODNAE Productions)

She added, "Women with a yeast infection often experience itching, burning, and a thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge. There might also be redness and swelling of the vulva. Over-the-counter antifungal creams or suppositories are usually effective. In recurrent cases, a longer course of treatment or oral antifungal medication might be prescribed.” (Unsplash)

Dr Thakwani revealed. “When harmful bacteria outnumber the beneficial ones, it leads to this condition. Douching or having multiple sexual partners can increase the risk of BV. The hallmark symptom of BV is a fishy-smelling discharge, which may be greyish-white in colour." (Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels)

She concluded, "Some women also experience itching or burning during urination. BV is typically treated with prescription antibiotics, either in oral form or as a topical gel or cream. It's essential to complete the entire course of treatment, even if symptoms improve.” (Shutterstock)
