Eight-year-old Ravi Nath poses with a snake at Jogidera village in Uttar Pradesh. Nath belongs to a family that practices the dying tradition of snake charming in rural India. For centuries, India's snake charmers have enjoyed a celebrated place in the country's history. The hypnotic tunes they played to enchant snakes to dance have not only captured the imagination of Indians, but people world over. However, amid stringent wildlife protection laws, it is becoming a struggle to survive now. The Nath communities are largely illiterate and have no other source of income. The young Nath is currently being trained by his grandfather despite the fact it is illegal, and he could be jailed if caught. (Arun Sharma/HT PHOTO)
