Prasad Sonawane introduces himself as a software engineer on weekdays and a sand artist on weekends. He has learnt the art to balance his profession and passion. Honoured with several state and national awards, Sonawane’s YouTube channel recently was among the top 20 sand art channels on the web. Sonawane, a student of Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s College of Engineering, shared insights of his life.

Tell us about your educational background

I was a good student and I got my engineering degree in information technology from Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s College of Engineering (MMCOE), Karvenagar in 2010. Though I was in a technical course, my artistic bent of mind was also appreciated in college, unlike the stereotype. They supported me.

Tell us about the initial years after graduation

After graduation, I was placed in an IT company. I got my first chance to perform during the annual event of the company and I performed before 5,000 people. The audience liked it and the word spread like wildfire and soon I began to receive calls for several live shows.

Tell us about your career journey. The highs and lows so far...

In the beginning, the first two years were difficult, but things eventually got better. My love for painting kept me going. Today, I have done sand painting of several important personalities, like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former president Pratibha Patil and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and have received appreciation from them.

What attracted you to create art from sand

I was introduced to this art form in 2011 when I started to watch various online videos and taught myself the art. My background in painting helped me pick it up quickly.

What are your future plans?

I will continue to work as a sand artist as well as an software engineer as both things keeps me going.
