Two unidentified persons allegedly assaulted two youths inside the Shivtara Garden Society in Kothrud on Saturday night, leading to panic in the area.

The act has been captured on CCTVs where the armed youths were seen violently vandalising Saraswati paan shop in Azadnagar with a sharp weapon. Besides, the duo is seen snatching the bag of the victim identified as Ram Kumar Kurmi (48), a resident of Bavdhan Budruk.

According to officials and the CCTV footage, the duo brandished their sickle and threatened Kurmi with dire consequences before snatching his bag. When the victim’s friend tried to intervene, he too was physically assaulted along with Kurmi. The watchman at the security gate turned out to be a mute spectator to what was happening as the attackers were armed, police said.

Following the release of CCTV footage, the Kothrud police sprung into action and have indentified the two youths as Akhay Tembe (25) and Musa Shaikh (25), both residents of Kothrud. The duo has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) while their accomplices are yet to be identified. The police are also on the lookout for the duo who are yet to be arrested .The suspects have been booked under Sections 392, 427, 34 of the Maharashtra Police Act 1951.

PSI Digambar Jakhade said that the attackers seem to be addicts and stole cigarette packs worth ₹2,000 from Kurmi who is a paan stall owner in the area.

The FIR lodged at the Kothrud police station states that the duo demanded cigarettes at the time of closure of the paan stall around 11.300 pm and when Kurmi asked them to pay, they hit the counter with the sickle and stole cigarettes of different brands worth ₹2,000 and escaped.

“It is a serious case and there is a physical assault and threat to life by the suspects. We are tracking the suspects and they will be arrested soon,” Jakhade said.
