Days after the crime investigation department (CID) released pictures of four suspects allegedly involved in the killing of Rahul Phatangale, sole victim in the Bhima Koregaon violence, the local police have detained one of them. According to police officials, 21-year-old Suraj Shinde, a native of Daund in Pune district, was detained from Solapur.

“We have detained one of the suspects seen in the video and we will be handing him over to the CID as they are investigating the case,” said Dayanand Dhome, senior police inspector, Chaturshringi police station.

According to Dhome, the team of police officials detained the suspect based on inputs received from informers.

Earlier on June 8, the CID released video grabs and a mobile video of four persons seen assaulting Phatangale and appealed to the public to share any information about them.

Akkannouru Prasad, superintendent of police, CID, said, “The questioning of Shinde is currently on. He is likely to be arrested by Thursday.”

Phatangale, a resident of Kanur Mesai near Sanaswadi, was attacked and killed by a mob, armed with stone and sticks, near Sanaswadi during the violence.

Pune (rural) police have already arrested three people in connection with Phatangale’s death. The case was taken over by the state CID in February.
