If you assault cops, you will be dealt with sternly, warns Pune commissioner of police

There have been as many as six attacks on city cops during the past three months. He further said that the city police will not hesitate to go the extra mile to instil fear among those found guilty of physically assaulting police personnel.
Those who think that they can get away with assaulting cops are in for a rude shock, as the new Pune police commissioner K Venkatesham has announced that strict action will be initiated against offenders in such cases. Venkatesham also mentioned that such cases will be fast-tracked with the objective of ensuring that they are punished for their crime.

Venkatesham was interacting with the media persons during a special session held at the Pune Union of Working Journalists (PUWJ) in Navi peth on Friday afternoon.
The police commissioner said that traffic indiscipline was a serious issue affecting the citizens and the city and it would be his top priority to sort out the chaotic traffic scenario in the city. “We had a positive discussion with Pune municpal corporation (PMC) commissioner Saurabh Rao and a meeting between the traffic police and the PMC will be held soon to discuss how to solve traffic problems in the city,” he said.
Expressing concern over the rising fatal accidents in the city, police commissioner Venkatesham said that it was a cause of concern and “I have myself observed the accident statistics and will ensure that the issue is resolved and discipline is inculcated among the citizens,” he said.
Venkatesham also emphasised that the Pune police need to enhance their skills to combat the rising menace of cyber crimes and economic frauds taking place across the city. “New technologies are being used by criminals and the police need to be one step ahead. For that, we have issued instructions to boost the functional literacy of policing skills in detecting economic and cyber frauds,” he said.
The commissioner also added that prominent Information Technology (IT) companies would be assisting the police in honing the cyber sleuthing skill sets of cops. “We will make the lost and found link and online tenant registration link citizen-friendly and interactive to address the grievances of all the citizens. The good work of the police department will be highlighted to enhance the image of the police in the eyes of the people,” he said.
Four assaults in one month
- Nigdi police arrested four persons on charges of physically assaulting constable Ashok Thakaware (27) inside Hotel Rathi in Raje Shivajinagar in Chikhali.
- A police constable attached to the Hinjewadi police station was assaulted by two local youths who expressed displeasure when the cop stopped their car for a security check while he was on patrolling duty.
- A police constable attached to the Mundhwa police station was assaulted by a businessman Rikin Tukaram Karne, 32, near 1 Lounge, ABC road in Mundhwa. Abhijit Ugale, the police constable, lodged an official complaint in this regard.
- A police constable was assaulted by three vegetable vendors while he was on bandobast duty in Kalyaninagar. The complainant, who is a police constable with the Yerawada police station, was assaulted while on duty for chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’ visit to the city recently.
