Despite minimum temperatures falling to below 12 degrees Celsius this month, Pune is experiencing its hottest December since 2007, so far, according to data available with the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
With just eleven days left before we say goodbye to 2017, residents are yet to get a feel of the kind of winter the city is used to, with the IMD stating that there are no forecasts of minimum temperatures dropping below 11 degrees for the next five days.
DS Pai, head of the climate prediction group at IMD Pune said that the main reason why temperatures have not dropped below 11.7 degrees this December is the cloudy weather conditions that the city has experienced."One of the major reasons for cloudy weather in the city this month has been the cyclone Ockhi. Due to the cyclone, the city witnessed rainfall and clouds. The clouds trapped the heat due to which the temperature never dropped below 11.7 degrees."
According to the IMD, the lowest minimum temperature for the month of December so far was recorded on Tuesday, December 19, at 11.7 degrees Celsius.
In December 2007, the lowest minimum temperature recorded in the city was 10.9 degrees Celsius, while from 2008 to 2016 the minimum temperatures recorded in the city have been in the range of 6.5 degrees Celsius to 9 degrees Celsius.
MD officials said that cold winds coming from the north are not reaching the state and hence, the city is not being affected either.Right now, easterlies from the Bay of Bengal are bringing in moisture to this region due to which the temperature in the city is more or less constant.Officials added that up to December 25, the minimum temperature will be more or less around 11 degrees and is not expected to drop further.
According to IMD, the all time record for Pune’s lowest temperature was set on December 27, 1968, when the minimum temperature in the city dropped to 3.3 degrees Celsius.
The lowest minimum temperature in the state was 8 degrees Celsius at Gondia on Tuesday.
