Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule recently made a statement on the controversy around the Fergusson College student protest against the on-campus religious activity.

Clearly her stand on the matter, she said,“Maharashtra is progressive and tolerant. We are not opposed to any kind of worship, but religious activities in an educational complex is not correct constitutionally,” said Sule during a recent meeting at the Pune Municipal Corporation.

She was speaking the context of the recent strife at 133-year-old Fergusson College , which came under the radar due to allegedly unconstitutional activities. The non-teaching staff of the institute run by the Deccan Education Society, on Friday had conducted a religious ceremonial worship of the Hindu deity, Satyanarayan at their administration building.

Claiming it to be in violation to the constitution of India,a group of about 50 students, including some affiliated to the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Janata Dal (United), protested saying that the religious ceremony tarnished the secular character of the institute.

Although the college is yet to reach a decision, following the protest, it released an official statement on Friday evening justifying that the 40-year-old practice was in goof faith. Due to objectives raised by several organisations, a proper probe into the matter will be done into the matter after consulting with the management and thethe Maharashtra government GR on the same, said the notification.
