The upcoming new terminal building at the Lohegaon international airport in Pune will be a green rating for integrated habitat assessment - 4 complaint (Griha) one, said Ajay Kumar, airport director, Lohegaon international airport.
Griha attempts to minimise a building’s resource consumption, waste generation and keeps in check the overall ecological impact within nationally acceptable limits and benchmarks.
“ We are pursuing more environment friendly features for the facility. Griha is a rating tool that helps the developer assess the performance of the building against certain nationally acceptable benchmarks. This can be done when the building is in the design and planning stage. While the design for the new terminal building has been approved, the work is expected to be started soon. The new terminal building should be operational by 2021. It is a part of the Pune airport’s expansion plans, ”he said.
Griha evaluates the environmental performance of a building holistically over its entire life cycle, thereby providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a ‘green building’.
The rating system, based on accepted energy and environmental principles, will seek to strike a balance between the established practices and emerging concepts, both national and international. Meanwhile, a public hearing on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the project was held at the airport on Wednesday.
Various issues like new integrated terminal building, reconstruction of old terminal building, modification of existing expanded terminal building, expansion of apron and link taxiway track, multilevel car park and cargo terminal at the Pune civil enclave (Pune airport) proposed by the airports authority of India (AAI) at the Pune airport were discussed in the public hearing.
