Commuting on Vadgaon bridge, the junction below the bridge and at the Vadgaon bus stop has become a nightmare for citizens due to growing traffic congestion in the area. The Pune traffic department identified these spots as the most accident-prone areas in the city.

Team Hindustan Times visited these spots on Wednesday and found that the roads face problems of traffic congestion, over speeding and people driving in wrong lanes.

The traffic flow in the area is heavy to and from areas like Dhayari, Narhe and Vadgaon.

The problem of traffic congestion was caused due to vehicles which had been parked haphazardly on roads and drivers violating traffic rules.

Residents of the area complained that the number of heavy vehicles has increased on city roads due to highways passing through the city. They claimed that the overall speed of vehicles on the city roads too has gone up risking the safety of vehicles on the road.

A pedestrian, Ajit Kumar said, “The number of vehicles have been increasing due to which the problem of traffic congestion in this area is growing. It is very difficult to cross the junction below the bridge on foot as vehicles come from all sides and it is too risky.”

Mandar Jadhav, a resident of Dhayari, too shared similar views.

“The area near Narhe, Dhayari, is being developed for residential users and a few industries have also come up there. So the flow of heavy vehicles is increasing and the number of vehicles on the roads has also grown. There are a lot of hawkers on the roads which adds to the problem,” he said.

City based expert Prashant Inamdar said, “Junctions on all roads needs to be designed properly. If junctions are too big, vehicles drive at a higher speed and pedestrians cannot cross the junction easily. Proper designing while constructing roads is very important.”

Expert Harshad Abhyankar, too, stated that to prevent over speeding, extremely wide roads with over two to three lanes must not be encouraged.

Box:

Increase in the number of vehicles, violation of traffic rules, haphazard parking of vehicles and bigger junctions has resulted in traffic congestion on these spots.

Experts suggest proper designing of roads and junctions to make them more pedestrian-friendly.
