Pune gymnasts, sports climbers strike gold in major medal haul

Nidhi Asbe and Anushka Lunawat claimed gold in the gymnastics event at the Dervan Youth Games at the Vithalrao Joshi charities trust’s sports academy in Dervan, Ratnagiri, on Wednesday.

Asbe won gold in aerobics gymnastics with total of 13.30 points. Silver in the event also went to city girl, Vrinda Sutar, with the total of 13.10 points.

Asbe who is a Class 7 student of Sou Tarabai Shankarlal Mutha Kanya Prashala started gymnastics at the age of five.

“I just looked at gymnastics as fun when I started, but later on I started practising seriously. Dervan is a tough competition, I am happy to win it,” said Asbe.

For Lunawat, it turned out to be very good outing in Ratnagiri as along with gold in the rope category, she also won silver in the club category.

“I follow what my coach Harshad Kulkarni tells me. He is very strict when it comes to practice,” said Lunawat, a Class 5 student of Infant Jesus High School.

All the medal winners train at Heaven sports development and research centre under coach Harshad Kulkarni.

“Happy to win seven medals, but going ahead from here I will love to see my students winning more gold medals in the future,” added Kulkarni.

City climbers shine

Young climbers from the city came out with an impressive performance winning four gold, three silver and two bronze medals in climbing.

Ashutosh Dokle, Arnav Khanzode, Sania Shaikh and Ananya Anbhule clinched gold medals, while Rahul Singh, Nirmayee Neve and Diksha Bodke won silver.

Adhiraj Magar and Mansi Magar settled for bronze medals.

Dervan Youth Games

Dervan Youth Games are conducted at Shri Vithalrao Joshi charities trust’s sports academy at Dervan in Ratnagiri, and have been on for the last five years. Four thousand boys and girls from all over Maharashtra take part. The games started on March 17 and will conclude on March 23.

Events are conducted in under-12, -14, -16 and -18 age categories.

Sports discipline includes: Athletics, archery, badminton, basketball carrom, chess, table tennis, gymnastic, sport climbing, kabaddi, kho kho, yoga, shooting, swimming, langdi, volleyball, football.

Total prize money: Rs 12 lakh
