After the ban on recruitment of principals to state universities was lifted by the state government on Tuesday after a wait of almost 10 years, recruitment of assistant professors is also expected to begin shortly.
According to records available with the directorate of higher education, more than 18,000 posts for assistant professors lay vacant across the state, which will be soon filled, said an official from the directorate of higher education.
“There are 171 colleges in the state that come under the purview of the directorate of higher education. We cannot let the quality of education be affected by the lack of educators in the vacant positions. Therefore, the vacant seats for the assistant professors and non-teaching staff in these colleges, which amount to over 18,000, will be looked into and we will consider opening them up for recruitment soon,” said Dhanraj Mane, director of higher education in Maharashtra.
This announcement came after the director of higher education lifted the ban from 261 vacant posts for college principals earlier this week.
Due to the long ban on the recruitment of principals, several colleges had been facing severe administrative difficulties. Most of the time, it would be the senior-most faculty taking up the position of an acting-principal temporarily. However, a staff member can hold the designation only for six months, after which the baton is passed on to the next in line.
